Oshawa
Quinn Design Associates is currently providing landscape consulting services for the Durham Consolidated Courthouse. QUINN brings a contemporary approach to public open space, emphasizing design of security, environmental, health, and energy standards. The firm reinterprets the classic parterre and bosque to make manifest a secure connection between the courthouse facility's state-of-the-art capabilities and the City of Oshawa's heritage streetscape. Security measures are embedded into the landscape as design elements. Light bollards, tree plantings, and reinforced seat and planter walls provide high perimeter security to mediate a smaller stand off distance. The main public entrance, Courthouse Square, reads as a comprehensible and secure approach sequence to the building using open sight lines in a large expanse of contiguous space. QUINN establishes sequential banding of materials, lighting elements, and a generously proportioned central axis. The bosque of trees anchors the relationship between the building and the surrounding spaces, acting as a sound barrier while maintaining clear visibility across the courtyard and street.
