Ottawa, Ontario
This retail/office development fronts Ottawa's Preston Street, south of a primary Italian neighbourhood. Working with City of Ottawa departments including Urban Design, Works, and Planning, QUINN developed a streetscape design which responds to the constraints of existing overhead hydro wires, an underground gas main and ROW regulations while providing an interesting and uniform streetscape along this exciting new retail block. The 5m-wide sidewalk is half public and half private, distinguished by a change in paving materials and street furniture. Location of street trees relate to both the on-street parking module and the building columns, marrying the street to the architecture. A family of contemporary furniture including pedestrian-scaled globe lights, benches, litter bins and bicycle hoops help to define this portion of the street while respecting the overall urban design guidelines for the street.
